A brother writes how through his business he found a way to stand up and support LGBT rights.
When my brother (Craig Ramsay) first confided in me that he was gay it really didn’t come as a surprise. If you truly know someone, as one would know their brother, you’ll already know these types of things. It’s just that our family, for better or for worse, doesn’t really discuss these really personal topics.
I’d like to say that my family and I have been supportive of Craig through the years. But I must admit that I feel guilt in that I haven’t gone out of my way to get more involved with the LGBT community. Even though our family had an amazing vacation on an R Family Cruise, I’ve always regretted not doing more to help my further my brother’s rights.
This past May my brother married his partner Brandon Liberati, a truly amazing man. There was no way that my family was going to miss this and boy am I glad we didn’t. It was such an amazing event. Not only were we able to witness the loving vows Craig and Brandon exchanged, I finally met my brother and his husband’s amazing network of friends, colleagues, and clients. The love and support that my brother gives to his friends and receives is phenomenal. I secretly wish that we had that same support. Though it saddens me to see the inequality and discrimination struggles that continue to exist for LGBT people and couples. Really, it’s appalling.
So we have decided to do something about it and utilize our business to be a voice for LGBT rights. We started with updating our values statement to include:
