Public invited to free prostate cancer lecture Oct. 7 at Scripps

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla

SAN DIEGO The public can learn the latest facts about one of the most confusing areas of health care – prostate cancer – at a free lecture Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The lecture will be led by a team of medical experts from Scripps Health. Michael Kosty, M.D., will review prostate cancer screening guidelines and how they apply differently to patients based on their individual situations. A look into various treatment options, such as minimally invasive surgery and proton therapy, will be presented by Carol Salem, M.D., and Carl Rossi, M.D. Attendees can observe a hands-on demonstration of the da Vinci robotic surgical system and learn how it is used by Scripps urologic surgeons.

Men will also receive access to free prostate cancer screenings later in October, including an individualized risk assessment, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and digital rectal exams. These will be offered on two dates: Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Scripps La Jolla (9888 Genesee Ave., La Jolla, 92037); and Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego (4077 Fifth Ave., San Diego 92103).

The lecture and screenings are open to the general public. For more information or to register, call 1-800-SCRIPPS (1-800-727-4777).

The American Cancer Society estimates that 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2014, making it the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men aside from skin cancer. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in men, with an estimated 29,480 deaths expected in the United States in 2014.
