SAN DIEGO — Diversionary Theatre has begun rehearsals for an all-star convivial new production: Paul Rudnick’s Regrets Only featuring Diversionary Theatre’s directorial debut of savvy local favorite Jessica John. The piece is a marvelous political satire based right smack in the middle of the tumultuous George W. Bush era. It’s an outlandish farce and a comedy of ‘Park Avenue manners’ where loyalty, marriage and civilities are vivaciously explored through the fabulous lives of high-society socialites Tibby McCullough (Kerry McCue) and her fashion-designing gay best friend (GBF) Hank Hadley (Andrew Oswald).
The piece takes place upon a glittering evening of charity events where Hank learns that Tibby’s husband Jack (Charles Maze) has been asked by the President to draft a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage. This launches the three friends into an exploration of commitments to friendships, love, and political conviction.
On the production, John says:
“I am so happy to be working at Diversionary Theatre, which has been a home to me as an actor and producer and now as a director. Diversionary continually impresses me with its success at telling such a wide variety of LGBT stories. REGRETS ONLY is special because it not only tackles the marriage equality issue, which is so significant to my generation and some of my very closest friends, but it also tackles a true love story between a gay man and a straight woman. I haven’t seen a piece of work that gives such a loving nod to these very special friendships and how deeply they can wound us and how truly they can save us.”
