After two years at Liberty Station, San Diego IndieFest creators/ producers Alicia Champion and Danielle LoPresti have decided to make a big move and transition the festival to their own ‘hood of City Heights, in an experiment to help revitalize and strengthen the city’s most culturally rich neighborhood.
California State Assembly Speaker, Toni Atkins, said, “I can attest to the singular effect that IndieFest had on the early years of North Park’s renaissance, and that communities like City Heights are especially appropriate for cross-generational, cross-cultural activities like IndieFest, that reach across boundaries and strengthen the social fabric of neighborhoods.”
After being a part of the exciting revitalization of North Park during the years of IndieFest 4, 5 and 6, the idea of what the festival could spark in City Heights has taken hold. And with the strong support of City Councilmember Marti Emerald and several other leaders in the City Heights area, LoPresti and Champion have decided to use 2014 to facilitate the move, resuming with IndieFest 9 in the Spring of 2015.
The event’s new home will be at the City Heights Recreational Center and Park, adjacent to the City Heights Public Library, and will continue to be family friendly, wildly eclectic and offer a wide array of visual art, activities, film and of course, tons of music. As always, IndieFest will feature the kind of roster you’ve come to expect – formidable Indie revolutionaries that excite and inspire.
Added to their partnership with the Central Coast’s production company Spin Cycle, San Diego IndieFest has now joined forces with Michele Clarke’s Sunset Sessions, which will enable the event to offer more than ever to its artists, which will of course end up in all kinds of fun surprises for audiences, as well. More details on this partnership to be announced.
San Diego IndieFest is dedicated to affirming the power of transformation that comes out of recognizing the independent spirit within us. Whether that manifests in music, film, art, business or community activism, it takes work, risk and dedication. Yet so many of these creatives go unnoticed by the general public. On IndieFest weekend, you can come empty and leave fully charged as you discover one after another of these remarkable artists and change-makers.
IndieFest 9 will have a whole new look, and will be more affordable than ever, but the goals are the same: to lift spirits, open minds and empower toward our most inventive, persevering selves.
