This adaptation of the David Sedaris essay of the same name made barely a ripple when it was barely released in theaters last year. A sudden ending to the film is probably the reasons – it’s a strangely unclimactic climax – but until then, it’s an affecting story of a pretentious young gay man who tries to ground himself out by working with his hands in rural Oregon. Jonathan Groff plays David, who takes a bus from Connecticut, where he has dropped out of grad school, to Oregon. David’s self-realization is a funny and oddly touching process, and the acting, from Corey Stoll to Denis O’Hare to Dale Dickey, makes the story more powerful than Sedaris probably planned. The ending sucks, but the rest is worth it.
