James Drake: Anatomy of Drawing And Space (Brain Trash)
This exhibition is the culmination of two years of active creation, reflecting imagery from throughout the artist’s forty-year career. In 2012, the artist committed himself to drawing every day. Some drawings are immediate, others take days. The resulting 1,242 drawings cull from his personal reservoir of images – wild animals, scientific formulas, personal portraits, art historical figures – and are rendered in pencil, ink and charcoal, often with collage and stencil work. Drake confronts structures that bind and urges that divide: from communication and culture to violence and addiction. Those subjects spill across this massive composition as well as an examination of the human figure from anatomy books to self-portraiture.

Chris Isaak
Humphrey’s favorite son returns since first gracing their stage in 1994. Expect the usual mixture of pathos and humor from this creative giant and his band. “Wicked Game” may be his best-known song; however after more than a quarter of a century into his career, Chris Isaak finally created the album he’s always wanted to make. Beyond the Sun, Isaak’s first Vanguard Records release is truly a labor of love. As a child spinning his parents 45s in their Stockton, Calif. home, this deeply committed artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis’ Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there, including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, all of them discovered and nurtured by the late, great Sun Records founder Sam Phillips.
Humphrey’s Concerts by the bay, 2241 Shelter Island Drive in San Diego, 7:30 p.m., tickets $85, 800-745-3000, humphreysconcerts.com
