HBO, Sunday, June 22, 10 p.m.
The TV show with the highest ratio of trash to production values, True Blood is returning for its seventh and final season. At this point, the hyper sexual and hyper violent vampire soap opera set in rural Louisiana is no longer HBO’s zeitgeist show – that’s a toss-up between Game of Thrones and True Detective. And its last few seasons have been so jumbled and unfocused, it’s hard to remember how taut and sexy and groundbreaking Alan Ball’s take on Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels were. Ball, who created Six Feet Under and won an Oscar for writing American Beauty, gave us a lot of great campy (and gay) fun, so I’m hoping that he will be able to wrap up the bloody saga in a satisfying way. Fingers and fangs crossed.
