San Diego City Council majority reaffirms commitment to Barrio Logan Plan

SAN DIEGO – With less than a month away from the June 3 election, a supermajority of the San Diego City Council, including Council President Todd Gloria and Councilmember David Alvarez, gathered today at City hall to announce their support for the Barrio Logan Plan and Propositions B and C.

Joining Council President Gloria and Councilmember Alvarez were senior Councilmembers Sherri LIghtner, Marti Emerald and Myrtle Cole, as well as newly sworn in Councilmember Ed Harris.
Council President Todd Gloria has been a strong supporter of the community’s plan since it was approved, including major support when he was Interim Mayor. In the past, he’s called on the City Council to not back down from the plan. He called on San Diegans to stand strong as well, and support Propositions B and C.
“I urge San Diegans to support healthier neighborhoods and sensible planning principles by voting yes on Props B and C. The Barrio Logan Community Plan makes sense for residents and businesses and will not interfere with existing industrial uses,” said Council President Gloria.
Councilmember Alvarez, who represents the Barrio Logan community and brokered a grand compromise to pass the plan, said that along with compromise, comes each side giving in a little to achieve common goals.
The shipyard industry was at the table along with residents and community groups for years to develop a plan that improves quality of life while protecting jobs in San Diego’s working waterfront.
“As a resident who grew up with asthma from polluted neighborhoods and who has family and friends working in the shipyards, I urge voters to support B and C to achieve our goals of protecting our children’s health while allowing our economy to grow,” said Councilmember Alvarez.
The rest of the team of City Council colleagues had the same message: Join residents, businesses and community groups and vote yes on B and C to uphold the Barrio Logan Community Plan.
Barrio Logan is one of many communities in San Diego working on updating outdated community plans to improve neighborhood health, economic development and overall quality of life. There is concern that if Propositions B & C are defeated and the Barrio Logan Plan is repealed, a dangerous precedent could be set, threatening community planning and healthy neighborhoods across the city.
