The Coen Brothers’ 1996 film Fargo is one of my favorites, featuring Frances McDormand’s epically funny, pregnant sheriff and an insanely, off-kilter snow noir screenplay, both Oscar winners. I’m not sure how Noah Hawley convinced the Coens, but they allowed him to make a series based on the same ideas but with different characters. I haven’t been able to see an episode, but the previews show the same sort of gorgeously bleak cinematography and wacky, snarky characters who are either pathetic or deadly or both. Impressively, the cast includes multiple Oscar-nominee Billy Bob Thornton, Sherlock’s Martin Freeman, Breaking Bad’s Bob Odenkirk and Colin Hanks.
