The Enchanted Island
The island of Coronado has always been a very special place – from the time many centuries ago when it was hunting and gathering grounds for the Native Americans to the present day when it serves as the home for more than 30,000 lucky residents and guests. This wonderful climate and access to the sea also make it an ideal location for the US Naval Air Station, the birthplace of naval aviation one hundred years ago. This exhibit draws from the Museum’s extensive collections, which includes art and ephemera from Coronado’s unique history, and a collection of historic photographs of life in Coronado since the 1880s.

Time and the Conways
The curtain rises on a gorgeous English country home in 1919, in the middle of a game of charades played by the young Conway family at a birthday party with their friends. Flash forward to 1937 in the same house: the grown children have gathered to settle family accounts in a world not as bright as it was. Time and the Conways , by the author of An Inspector Calls , is just the kind of theatrical gem Globe audiences love to rediscover, with the kind of sumptuous period scenery, costumes, and artistry for which The Old Globe is renowned.

Red
The story is set in 1958 at a critical point in the career of the superstar abstract expressionist painter. Rothko has been challenged to create a definitive work of art for the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. His problem: the threatening presence of a neophyte assistant, a voice of a new generation of artists that question Rothko’s theories and label him a sell-out. Surrounded by massive black and red canvases that pulsate with color, the result is an exhilarating and combative battle between student and master in search of the very highest art possible.
