Britannia rules at HWE’s upcoming spring concert, April 12

The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble (HWE) presents its spring concert, A Royal Concert: Last Night of the Proms Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4190 Front Street in San Diego. In the style of the BBC’s summer concert series “Promenade Concerts”, which are performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the ensemble’s conductor, John Winkleman, has chosen musical pieces which represent several countries in the United Kingdom. From Henry Wood’s “Fantasia On British Sea Songs” to Holst’s “First Suite In E-Flat For Military Band” to a rousing rendition of “Rule Britannia” with audience participation, to name a few. Also being performed are the three winning pieces from the ensemble’s 2013/14 international composition contest. The night promises to be a smashing, jolly good show. Refreshments will be served during intermission including home baked treats.

The 45 piece ensemble is in its 28th year of performing and is a program of The LGBT Center acting as a musical ambassador to the community as a whole. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased from any band member or at The Windsmith, 3875 Granada Ave. in North Park, and online at sdartstix.com.
