The season finale of this television season’s inarguably great drama is this weekend, and if you haven’t been watching, now is your time to catch up either on HBOGo or through other, less legal ways. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are detectives with the Louisiana state police and they have been chasing a ritualistic serial killer off and on for two decades: a vicious man or men who may be protected by powerful local political and church leaders. While this is the plot, True Detective is compelling because of Cary Fukunaga’s searing country noir direction and McConaughey’s performance as a haunted and disturbed investigatory genius, which IS so good, it makes his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club seem almost amateurish.
