SAN DIEGO – At 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18,  the iconic folk duo the Indigo Girls will join the San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) for an exclusive performance at the Balboa Theatre. This unprecedented concertSongs of Protest, Songs of Peaceis a fundraising event benefiting the newly launched Lesbian Health Initiative of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation.

Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace will draw from the music that embodied both the anger and optimism of America’s social and political evolution in the 20th and 21st centuries. With songs from the labor, civil rights, anti-war, women’s liberation and LGBT equality movements, the audience will experience the power of music to provoke, illuminate and inspire. SDWC will perform a diverse program of pop, gospel, musical theatre and choral selections that cover a range of topics including anti-bullying, Quaker pacifism and South African anti-apartheid history.

“San Diego Human Dignity Foundation is proud and pleased to support this landmark concert,” said SDHDF Executive Director John Brown. “Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace promises to be a once in a lifetime event that entertains, enlightens and raises funds for the benefit of our lesbian community. This exciting concert will give our community the opportunity to support and enjoy the wonderful women’s chorus on a whole new level.”

“SDWC celebrates diversity and we are proud that this program offers the audience a musical experience that is diverse in both content and style. We are happy there will be songs that the audience will want to sing along to, but we’re also very excited to introduce them to some lesser known but incredibly moving pieces,” said Board President Carin Scheinin. “Of course, we are over the moon excited to welcome the Indigo Girls as special guests for this incredible event and we can’t wait to have the opportunity to share the stage with them!”

Last year, in response to growing concern from the community, San Diego Human Dignity Foundation launched the Lesbian Health Initiative to address the disparities in services and resources for lesbians throughout San Diego County.  The Initiative has two goals: to identify needs and resources throughout San Diego County, and to build an endowment to fund the current and future health needs of lesbians in San Diego County. Co-produced by SDHDF, Songs of Protest, Songs of Protest has received major sponsorships from San Diego Pride, The BCause Fund and generous individual San Diegan philanthropists.
