Bethany

Crystal and Gary live in a nice home in the suburbs. Only it’s not theirs. In fact, they didn’t know each other before they moved in – and the story of how they got there is the beginning of Crystal’s plan to get her life back on track. Between her job at the Saturn dealership, her new housemate’s conspiracy theories, and the motivational speaker who just might buy that sports car, Laura Marks’ powerful new drama will take you on the ride of your life, with a woman willing to take on anything and everything … all for someone named Bethany. Contains strong language and a brief scene of staged violence that may not be suitable for all audiences.

The Old Globe, Sheryl & Harvey White Theatre, 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park, 2 and 8 p.m., tickets from $29, 619-234-5623, theoldglobe.org

In the Séance Room

In the Séance Room presents a selection of objects acquired over the past decade. The exhibition takes its name from the last phrase in the title of Jeremy Blake’s multi-canvas painting which was acquired in 2003. The piece is part of a body of work that takes as its subject the legendary (and supposedly haunted) Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Calif., as well as the legacy of 1960s Color Field painting. The small central gallery features works that hybridize photography, video, and sculpture.

MCASD Downtown, 1100 and 1001 Kettner Blvd. in San Diego, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., general admission $10, 858-454-3541, mcasd.org

Scott Rohlfs: Masks of Sanity

ArtHatch and Distinction Gallery are excited to present an extraordinary solo exhibition featuring the artwork of Scott Rohlfs. This exhibit will highlight Rohlfs’ most current paintings focusing on surreal imagery and the female figure. The women who populate Scott Rohlfs’ acrylic paintings are a fusion of the artist’s personal experiences and influences. His women exist in a realm of moody atmospheres, tattoo-inspired couture and pop cultural elements. Rohlfs combines classic realism with an element of distortion when painting, resulting in surreal imagery.

Distinction Gallery, 317 E Grand Ave. in Escondido, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., admission free, 760-707-2770, distinctionart.com

Prix Pictet: Power

Prix Pictet, an annual juried prize, uses photography as an instrument to shed light on important social and environmental issues. This year’s selected theme was Power. Photography professionals from around the world nominated more than 650 photographers from 76 countries for the Prix Pictet prize. A jury then whittled down that list, based on both artistry and the illustration of this year’s theme, to a final short list of twelve. These twelve photographers are featured in the exhibition with Luc Delahaye winning the actual Prix Pictet award. MOPA will have 56 images on display from the 12 featured artists.

Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), 1649 El Prado in Balboa Park, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., adult admission $8, 619-238-7559, mopa.org
