The widely promoted new HBO show Looking is about three gay men in San Francisco looking for love. The men (Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett) are very good looking and the show is explicit, so I’m betting the ratings will be high. However, I’m particularly excited about the show because one of its producers is Andrew Haigh, who wrote and directed Weekend, the best film about gay male relationships since Brokeback Mountain. If the show can retain even a fraction of the raw emotional honesty of Weekend, it will be a big, big deal.
