San Diego mayoral candidates announce debate schedule for Feb. 11 runoff election

SAN DIEGO – Mayoral candidates and San Diego City Councilmembers David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer today announced six debates they will participate in leading up to the Feb. 11 special runoff election. The top two finishers in the Nov. 19 primary election announced soon after they would work together to agree upon a half dozen debates.

Diegans the opportunity to view and listen to the debates. Debates will be professionally moderated by the media hosts, with questions coming from the moderator or a panel.

The two candidates have agreed to participate in the following debates:

Wednesday, Jan. 15

1:00 p.m. taping (broadcast time to be determined)

Media Hosts: KGTV 10 News (Channel 10) and KPBS News (89.5 FM/Channel 11)

Friday, Jan. 17

2:30 p.m. taping (broadcast time to be determined)

Media Host: KUSI News (Channel 9/51)

Thursday, Jan. 23

6:00 p.m. broadcast

Media Host: NBC 7 San Diego (Channel 7/39)

Sunday, Jan. 26

9:00 p.m. broadcast (taping January 25 at 3:00 p.m.)

Media Host: San Diego 6 the CW (Channel 6)

Thursday, Jan. 30

11:00 a.m. broadcast

Media Host: KFMB (760 AM and Channel 8)

Friday, Jan. 31

6:00 p.m. broadcast (taping at 5:00 p.m.)

Media Host: Univision San Diego (Channel 17)

The two candidates have agreed on nine community organizations to cohost the debates with the media outlets above. Community organizations are still in the process of partnering with a media hosts.

  • Livable Streets Coalition
  • Mid-City Community Advocacy Network Youth Council
  • San Diego Center for the Blind
  • San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council
  • San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce
  • San Diego Society of Professional Journalists
  • Senior Community Centers San Diego
  • Veterans Museum

The community organizations will offer some of the questions and topics for the candidates to discuss at the debates. Debate locations will be announced once the media/community partnerships have been finalized.
