The Glenner Memory Care Centers, a local nonprofit providing programs and resources for those living with dementia, was the lucky
beneficiary for the very popular San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) holiday concerts in mid-December. Representatives dropped off a check Dec. 23 for $2,128 from donations collected in a giant ruby red slipper in the lobby of the Balboa Theatre during two performances of The Nutcracker (Men in Tights!) Dec. 14 and 15. That’s in addition to the hundreds of dollars of music and art supplies that the choir members donated during a special donations drive this year.
“Glenner was there for my family when my father really needed help,” said SDGMC Artistic Director Gary Holt remembering when his
father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. “Not only did they improve my father’s quality of life, but they also provided support and care to our entire family during an extremely difficult period.”
First Tenor Kevin Hannahoe also knows how special The Glenner Centers are from a different perspective – as a volunteer. Hannahoe
worked on Glenner’s 30th Anniversary celebration committee and continues to help with special events and fundraisers.
“I’m very supportive and appreciative of the good work The Glenner organization does for local seniors and their families,” noted Hannahoe. “They offer a personal touch when caring for their clients.”
For more than thirty years Glenner Memory Care Centers (formerly known as the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, Inc.) have
provided individualized high-quality day programs in a family-like setting for adults affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory impairment. Many of the participants in the centers include the frail elderly as well as veterans
A primary focus of Glenner’s mission is to provide support and resources for the caregiver. Adult day programs offer the caregiver
respite, the ability to continue working, and reduced financial obligation. Weekly support groups and seminars are professionally facilitated, offered at no charge, and help prepare the caregiver for the challenges of caring for someone with unique needs.
The Hillcrest Support Group meets 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays at 3702 Fourth Ave. in San Diego; 619-543-4704.
