LGBT Latino authors to read, speak at new San Diego Central Library

SAN DIEGO – “What is the state of literature by LGBT authors of color in the new millennium?” That is the question that will be discussed by two LGBT New York authors at San Diego’s new Central Library at the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Common, (330 Park Blvd., San Diego, 92111)  Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mary Hollis Clark Conference Center.

Charles Rice-González published his first novel, Chulito, in 2011; Emanuel Xavier, a prolific poet, will read from his first novel, Christ Like, published in 1999. Neither author has read their work in San Diego before.

Their appearance at the new library is co-sponsored by Lambda Literary Foundation (LLF), celebrating its 25th anniversary, and the San Diego Multicultural LGBT Literary Foundation, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary.

A panel discussion featuring the two authors and LLF executive director, Tony Valenzuela, will be moderated by Caleb Rainey, executive director, San Diego Multicultural LGBT Literary Foundation, after a short reading by each of the authors.

The event is open to the public and admission is a donation of whatever amount attendees choose.

“When book publishing is in crisis, the first titles to get lost are those of LGBT authors of color,” said Rainey.

“Through our programs that honor excellence, promote visibility and encourage the development of emerging writers, Lambda Literary celebrates and nurtures the diversity of LGBT literature and writers,” said Valenzuela.

The reading and panel discussion is the first collaboration between the two organizations and is part of the anniversary celebration for San Diego Multicultural Literary’s week-end of events which include a party and dinner at Bamboo Lounge (1475 University Ave., 92103). Tickets to that event are available online athttp://sdmllf.brownpapertickets.com or you can contact the organization at info@sdliteraryfoundation.org for more information.
