John Alexander to step down as Diversionary executive director

John Alexander

Today, Diversionary Theatre announced that Executive Director John Alexander will be stepping down.

The  Board of Trustees issued a statement that read:

“Today the Board of Trustees is announcing the resignation of our Executive Director, John E. Alexander. We are very grateful for John’s vision, passion and leadership over the past 2 and ½ years. And, while disappointed he is not able to remain with us longer, we are appreciative of the many lasting contributions he has made to the growth and professionalism of our theatre.

John has been instrumental in helping build the strong Board that will help make this transition as smooth as possible.  The ten outstanding community volunteers I work with on our Board have the knowledge, skill-set and commitment to navigate us through this transition and build a strong Diversionary for the future.

As donors, patrons & volunteers, your engagement is paramount to our continued success. Your input is welcome and we want to hear from you. In turn, the Board’s commitment to you is regular and timely communication as we plan for the future, execute on the transition and search for the next Diversionary leader.

Please join me in wishing John well and thanking him for his dedicated service to Diversionary. Below is a personal letter from John to all of you.”

According to a report in the U-T Alexander said, “There are personal and family things I need to devote time to right now.”

The U-T report stated  that Alexander, who is married, said he plans to stay in San Diego. He has no immediate plans to step into a new job: “I promised my husband I’d take at least six months off,” he said.

He is particularly glad to be staying through the premiere later this month of She-Rantulas From Outer Space, a new work by San Diego theater artists Ruff Yeager and Phil Johnson that was developed at Diversionary.

Alexander will leave his post Nov. 3. No successor has been named and the board’s executive committee will run the theatre until a replacement is found.
