Mister Cee, the popular New York City-based HOT 97 DJ who was forced to resign after his solicitation of a male prostitute was leaked to the public, Tweeted later that day that he may be “better off dead.” The scandal began on Wednesday, according to reports in RolliingOut.com, AllHipHop.com and other Web sites devoted to hip-hop culture, after a statement was released by Alexandra Cameron, the senior vice president and general manager of the station: “Due to some personal circumstances that have become public, after 20 years of service, Mister Cee has chosen to resign. We feel that this is in the best interest of both HOT 97 and Cee’s personal well-being. While we do not endorse the alleged activities, he is clearly facing a personal dilemma that is for him and only him to comment on. Moments ago, he officially signed off, on the air and will finish out his last show today Sept. 11, an already sad day for New York City.”
The ‘alleged activities’ Cameron is referring to are Mister Cee’s well-known penchant for male prostitutes. But despite denying being gay (and being charged with a misdemeanor of loitering with the intent of soliciting sex), the hip-hop veteran was backed into a corner when an audio tape secretly recorded by a YouTube personality, cross-dresser Bimbo Winehouse, revealed the DJ offering $100 for sex.
The 46-year-old former Big Daddy Kane DJ who is widely credited with discovering Notorious BIG, issued a statement on Wednesday stating that, “”Ain’t nobody perfect man. I have made my mistakes. But when it effect people that you came up with, you don’t want to put them through it anymore. I’m just going to move on, man.”
One of the lingering questions that remain is how this might have all played out had the prostitutes been women and not men given the notoriously homophobic environment of the hip-hop culture.
