The Lambda Literary Foundation (LLF) has announced the opening of book submissions and revised submission guidelines for the Lambda Literary Awards, celebrating the best in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature. Books submitted for consideration of this Lammys cycle must be published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.
Entering their 26th year, the Lammy Awards honor books in over twenty genres ranging from fiction and poetry to speculative fiction, romance and memoir.
For the first time ever, the Lambda Literary Awards will honor LGBT Graphic Novels in their own category in keeping with the explosion of titles, and talent, that have enriched LGBT literature for years. The new LGBT Graphic Novels category is defined as “any work – fiction or nonfiction – that uses a combination of words and sequential art to convey a narrative and is published in book form (as distinguished from periodical comic books). Open to any genre or topic this category includes graphic novels, graphic memoirs and comic anthologies. May include historical, genre fiction (such as sci/fi, horror, romance or mystery), erotica, humor, parenting, gender studies, sex education, psychology or any other style of fiction or nonfiction. Comic books, periodicals and web-only content is not eligible.”
“Graphic novels have been a part of great literature for decades,” said Tony Valenzuela, LLF’s Executive Director. “And queer writers have been at their forefront. I’m thrilled that the Lambda Literary Awards will be spotlighting these artists in their own category and exposing more of these stories to a ever-growing audience of readers.”
Since their inception in 1989, the Foundation has handed out more than 500 Lammys in celebration of excellence in LGBT literature. Awards for books published in 2013 will be handed out at the 26th Annual Lambda Literary Awards gala planned for late spring of 2014 in New York City.
The revised guidelines and online submission form appear on the LLF website. They are effective immediately.
