
Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST), San Diego’s mostly lesbian and gay masters swim team, finished a strong ninth out of the 34 teams represented at the 2013 International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) Championships in Seattle, Wash. Sixteen swimmers from DSST joined a total of 392 swimmers overall at the five day meet held in August at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
District of Columbia Aquatics recaptured the IGLA team title from Team New York Aquatics, the 2012 team champions. DSST racked up 234 points, comfortably ahead of Colorado Masters who rounded out the top ten. Points were awarded to top eight finishers. All sixteen DSST swimmers scored points through relay or individual swims.
Individual firsts were captured by Mike Greenberg (100 IM) and Grant Wilson (50 freestyle). Medals were awarded to top three finishers in each event. Additional DSST medal winners included Joe Clauson (50 butterfly), Mike Greenberg (50 and 100 backstroke), Ken Griffiths (200 freestyle), Jimmy Harden (1500 freestyle and 200 breastroke), Tom Herbert (200 freestyle), Abe Menchaca (50 backstroke), Kathleen Morris (800 freestyle), Steve Tokraks (50 and 100 butterfly, 100 IM), and Grant Wilson (200 freestyle). DSST relay medal winners were the 800 freestyle relay team of Tokraks, Griffiths, Mike Givens and Wilson, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Tokraks, Menchaca, Harden and Givens.
