An iconic Hillcrest delicatessen is changing after thirty years of business. City Delicatessen & Bakery owners Alan Blimes and Michael Wright are finally saying farewell after nearly three decades at their location on the corner of University and Sixth Avenues, next to the Hillcrest sign.
New owners Frank Lechner, Michael (Big Mike) Phillips and Tom Brown will keep City Delicatessen doors open as they transition to a new restaurant concept: Harvey Milk’s American Diner.
According to Lechner, remodeling plans are tentatively scheduled for September/October. Both the interior and exterior of the restaurant will be getting a fresh new look. The Diner will close down for a brief period during the remodel.
Many of the menu favorites and the famous bakery will continue to be a part of the business. A new menu will be rolled out around Labor Day.
“Harvey Milk’s American Diner will be offering a full bar with all the current and popular cocktails. The new menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner will have a mix of American comfort food including healthy options and low calorie plates,” said Lechner.
“Harvey Milk’s American Diner is a place where we will feed the soul of our community. Everyone is welcome.”
The Harvey Milk American Diner will operate under a license from the Milk Family. As total compensation for this license agreement, 1 percent of gross sales will go to the Harvey Milk Foundation.
Came from texas to visit the beauitful San Diego, Harvey Milk’s was the place for a late lunch and a comfy place to socialize, I ordered the Strawberry Walnut Salad and we all had a slice of the German Chocolate and Rainbow cakes, The Food was delicious and the service was perfect! My tea glass was always full, server came by several times just to make sure we had everything we needed!
The visit was wonderful, so friendly, casual, down to earth kind of place.
I give it 5 full stars, I highly recommended this to any and all looking for a great place to enjoy a delicious meal, a drink and/or just to unwind.
The atmosphere is comfortable, clean, and bright.
Restrooms were clean and fully stocked. The area is full of history.
5 stars!
