Among the worst holes in my film watching history is Gaslight, the movie that gave us the term “gaslighting,” which means creating an elaborate lie to fool someone, ultimately driving them mad. The film is considered one of the greatest ever made, with (gay) George Cukor directing Charles Boyer as the gaslighter, Ingrid Bergman as the gaslightee, Joseph Cotton as her hopeful savior and Angela Lansbury as a sassy maid. It was made in 1944, and nominated for seven Oscars. Bergman won Best Actress. I’m looking forward to finally seeing it this weekend.
