Elected officials square off in Tamale Making Contest at ‘Spirit of the Barrio’ fundraiser July 19

Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) will host a Tamale Making Contest at their July 19 Spirit of the Barrio fundraiser featuring elected official contestants. The contest is part of a special happy hour fundraiser that will include entertainment and FHCSD’s famous tamales.

Contest participants will include:

David Alvarez, Councilmember, City of San Diego District 8

Jack Dale, Councilmember, City of Santee

Todd Gloria, Council President, City of San Diego District 3

Lorena Gonzalez, Assemblywoman, 80th District

Ann Moore, Board Chair, Unified Port of San Diego

Mary Salas, Councilmember, City of Chula Vista

Mary Sessom, Mayor, City of Lemon Grove

Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians Tribal Councilmember

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner is scheduled to attend.

San Diego Channel 10’s Itica Milanes will be the event emcee.

For more than 25 years, Spirit of the Barrio events have raised critical support for Family Health Centers of San Diego’s programs and services. More than 500 supporters including individuals, businesses, corporate sponsors, political and community leaders attend each event to enjoy a famous tamales  and gather for networking, education, entertainment and community building.

What: Spirit of the Barrio benefiting Family Health Centers of San Diego

When: Friday, July 19 4-6 p.m. (Tamale Making Contest at 5 p.m.)

Where: Logan Heights Family Health Center, 1809 National Ave., San Diego, CA

Cost: $25 per person or $200 for ten.
