From today, committed gay and lesbian couples across the the state of Delaware can enjoy the equal benefits of marriage.
The Delaware Civil Marriage Equality and Religious Freedom Act of 2013 – signed by Gov. Jack Markell in early May – goes into effect today.
The Human Rights Campagn (HRC) played a key role in the robust field organizing efforts that led to the successful passage of both the Marriage Act and the Gender Identity Non-Discrimination Act earlier this year.
HRC began working in the First State in 2009, providing critical financial and staff support to Equality Delaware for campaigns to prohibit discrimination and pass civil unions for same-sex couples.
On signing the bill, Gov. Markell said, “All Delawareans deserve the same dignity and respect when it comes to their most important, loving relationship. For that reason, I am proud to support marriage equality.”
