When his father dies, Patrick Dennis goes to live with his Aunt Mame, who is arguably the greatest diva ever to be filmed. Mame is an amazing combination of intellectual, partier, comedian, dilettante, muse and mother, and as played by Rosalind Russell, she is indelible. Her delivery of Betty Comden and Adolph Green’s script is as pitch perfect a comedic performance as any in film history. She is enormously helped by costars Coral Browne and Peggy Cass, but perhaps even more so by Orry-Kelly’s costumes and Malcolm Bert’s art direction, which are as wonderfully, outrageously garish as Mame herself.
