Following the weekend game in the Eastern Conference finals by the Indiana Pacers, Roy Hibbert went to the podium with Paul George after
the game to address the media. While speaking to reporters, the Pacers center dropped the gay slur “no homo” when discussing defense and helping George contain LeBron James.
According to CBS Sports, hours after the comment, Hibbert reached out on Twitter to Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay active male athlete in one of the major sports in April when he came out in a Sports Illustrated column.
Then on Sunday Hibbert apologized through a press release
“I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during thepostgame press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night. They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night.”
There has been no comment from the league over a possible fine for Hibbert as a result of his remarks.
