After a nine year hiatus the San Diego American Flag Football League’s (SDAFFL) Surf & Turf Tournament is back April 27- 28. The only tournament of its kind on the West Coast, the Surf & Turf Tournament is expected to bring in some of the best LGBT flag football teams for what is being seen as a possible foreshadowing of things to come at this year’s National Tournament to be held in October.
Last held in 2004, Surf & Turf’s return adds to the circuit of tournaments such as Florida’s Sunshine Cup, and Chicago’s Pride Bowl leading up to National Championships to be held in Phoenix, Ariz. With 12 teams registered, translating to approximately 300 participants, this sold out event will be bringing visitors from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Denver as well as six teams from San Diego County.
Mike Paganelli, SDAFFL commissioner said, “The Surf & Turf is a great way to give our players some tournament experience so that they can feel that excitement and rush you get from playing under these conditions and it gets them excited for the Nationals in October.”
Tournament co-director and SDAFFL founder, Ivan Solis said, “San Diego has long since been a favorite location for a tournament. We are pleased and excited to be able to bring the Surf & Turf back and at a level that most of these players are accustomed to. The Surf & Turf Tournament board, crew and sponsors have all worked really hard to host a top-notch event.”
Games start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with round robin to determine tournament seeding; Sunday it is single elimination. Games are played at Nobel Athletic Fields located at 8820 Judicial Drive, San Diego, 92122.
