LOS ANGELES — Equality California has announced the endorsement of Lorena Gonzalez for the 80th State Assembly District. Gonzalez, who currently serves as the secretary-treasurer and CEO of the San Diego and Imperial Counties AFL-CIO, is running to replace the seat vacated by Ben Hueso, whom EQCA endorsed and who recently won a special election to State Senate District 40. The 80th Assembly District encompasses portions of San Diego County, including Chula Vista and the Barrio Logan, San Ysidro and City Heights neighborhoods of San Diego. The special election will be held on July 30.
“Replacing Senator Hueso with Lorena Gonzalez’s proven track record would be a win for constituents and LGBT Californians,” said John O’Connor, EQCA executive director. “EQCA couldn’t be happier to endorse Lorena Gonzales for the 80th Assembly District.”
“I am honored to have the endorsement of such an important civil rights group,” said Gonzalez. “Equality California knows I will be proud to continue to fight with them for full equality for all Californians.”
Gonzalez is a strong supporter of full equality for the LGBT community, and has worked to elect LGBT candidates at all levels of government, including Dave Roberts, the first LGBT candidate elected to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Assemblymember Toni Atkins and State Senator Christine Kehoe. She has done direct work educating union members about equality for LGBT people.
Gonzalez has also been recognized by the San Diego Democrats for Equality with their J. Douglas Scott Award for Political Action, and organized the San Diego chapter of the AFL-CIO Pride@Work constituency group for LGBT union members.
