San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus concert to benefit Mama’s Kitchen

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) has announced that it has selected Mama’s Kitchen as its 2013 spring concert community partner. Audience members attending Rocket Man – The Music of Elton John will be asked to deposit their donation during the intermission in the Chorus’ iconic giant ruby slipper in the theater lobby. The concert takes place April 13 and 14 at the Birch North Park Theatre.

“Mama’s Kitchen has touched the lives of so many people throughout San Diego with their meals and message of hope,” said Marc Mangiantini, SDGMC director of outreach.  “Their volunteers provide an actual lifeline to those who need it the most.”

Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 to deliver meals to people living with AIDS.  In 2006, the organization expanded to include people living with cancer and opened Mama’s Pantry for low-income HIV/AIDS clients.  Through the years, Mama’s Kitchen has delivered more than six million meals along with a message of hope and compassion.  Mama’s Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes sings second tenor with the chorus.

This is the third year SDGMC’s community outreach programs have sought to help groups doing extraordinary work in the San Diego area.  Past concert partnerships have benefited a scholarship program for abused children, a shelter for homeless and low-income women, a youth arts and music program, and a program dedicated to serving the needs of women, children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Tickets are available for Rocket Man—The Music of Elton John Saturday, April 13, 8 p.m. for $25-$43; and Sunday, April 14, 3 p.m. matinee for $21-$38.  A $5 discount is available for seniors, students, military and groups of 10 or more.  The Birch North Park Theatre is located at 2891 University Ave. in San Diego.  For more information and tickets , visit sdgmc.org or call 877-296-7664.
