An assistant principal at Purcell Marian Catholic High School in Cincinnati, Mike Moroski, has been fired for a post in support of marriage equality on his personal blog.
According to a report on News.Cincinnatti.com, Moroski refused to take down his statements on the blog.
“I believe in Catholicism,” Moroski said in an interview. “But my conscience will not permit me to recant my statement.
On hearing news of the firing Human Rights Campaign (HRC) vice president for communications Fred Sainz released the following statement:
“It’s truly unfortunate that standing up for marriage equality has apparently cost Mike Moroski his job. HRC admires his commitment to equality and hope that it continues. While the school that employed Mr. Moroski is run by the Catholic Church and thus has a First Amendment right to terminate employees like Mr. Moroski who hold beliefs that differ from church policy, that does not make their decision to do so right, since 59 percent of Catholics support marriage equality.”
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati, which operates Purcell Marian, said it could not comment on a personnel
