San Diego’s newest community theatre company is presenting a revival of The Laramie Project and partnering with the Hillcrest Youth Center to bring awareness and support for local LGBT youth.
The Trinity Theatre Company revisits the tragic hate crime in October 1998 when a gay 21-year-old University of Wyoming student was kidnapped, beaten and left to die on a fence on a remote prairie outside Laramie, Wyo.
Matthew Shepard endured almost 18 hours near death before he was discovered. He later died from his injuries sparking international outrage because of the men who committed the murder and because the victim was gay.
New York playwright, Moises Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theatre Project later made six trips to Laramie in the aftermath of the beating and subsequent trials of the perpetrators to interview the town’s community about what happened.
Trinity director, Sean Paul Boyd has chosen to emphasis the theme of love in this latest interpretation of the play. The cast features Connor Boyd, William Corkery, Bill Corkery, Sean Paul Boyd, M.G. Perez, John Fojtik, Martha Kinkade, Elizabeth Greene, Kimberly Davies, Brandi Lacy, Travis Spackman, Lisa Ritz and Katie Armstrong.
The show runs in February, the historic month of love. In keeping with this production’s theme, Trinity and its cast members are using their performances to bring awareness to the Hillcrest Youth Center which offers support for San Diego LGBTQ+ youth and their allies, ages 14-18. Volunteers will host an information table at each performance of The Laramie Project answering questions and providing additional information on the program that features numerous services including HIV prevention, leadership training, life skills workshops, financial education, creative and performing arts activities and a variety of support groups.

Great Show! I was really impressed how the actors were able to do so much with so little. They used the minimal space, props, lighting and scenery to its full potential and told the story perfectly. Had me crying in my chair! Thank god for the actor who play the Bartender or I would have gone home really depressed. He really lightened the atmosphere and it was much needed. The actor who played Matt’s father was incredible also! Great job! Great show that everyone must see once!
