Happy holidays to one and all

(L-R) San Diego School Board members

My heart is full of pride for our community … always there for the Imperial Court’s annual toy, food and blanket drives. Among the many children who received toys and food vouchers were 200 children of GLBT parents. Thank each and every one of you. You make our holiday drives the success they have been since the 970s. God bless you all.

The true meaning of Christmas

I hope all of my many Jewish friends had a very happy Hanukkah. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and this has got lost in the season which is all about commercializing the holiday.

There are many churches that welcome GLBT Christians. Take some time to thank Him for all you have because, believe it or not, there are many people worse off than you are.

Remember the real reason for the season.

Gun control now!

For decades I have been writing about the need for tougher gun control laws. But you have to get involved by writing to your state and federal elected officials.

I lived in a time when you could leave your doors unlocked and your churches and schools were safe.

We must all get involved in this issue and not let it drop after all of our tears dry up over those who were recently massacred. Thank you.

Auntie Helen’s must repay part of County grant

The mismanagement of AIDS funding of Auntie Helen’s continues to grow as I now know of two official investigations going forward.

A 00 grant for replacing “washers and dryers” was instead used for new carpets, staff car repairs and other items.

The chairman of the board of the County Board of Supervisors, Ron Roberts informed me this week that any money that is returned because of misuse would be given to an AIDS organization in good standing.

This growing Auntie Helen’s scandal is getting more mainstream media headlines and I have learned from the former manager/bookkeeper, who blew the whistle on this scandal and was then fired, that many times cash was missing from the register including petty cash. Around $2,400 in the last year alone.

City Commissioner

That the $500,000 Joan Kroc grant is down to 00; that the board is made up of about only four to six people – all close friends; that staff ate at the Red Lobster with an Auntie Helen’s credit card … and the media already reported that its executive director, Michael Dudley used the same credit card at a casino in Florida and charged more than 00 for his smiling and lying teeth.

While I cannot say, at this time all that is being discovered, after private meetings with top law enforcement and government officials, I can say that they have just touched the tip of the iceberg.

As I said, my appreciation and respect goes to all of the unpaid volunteers and good-minded donors, but the entire board needs to resign and the staff fired. Period.

People, politics and opinions

A freshman congressman is the most vulnerable when seeking re-election, especially when he won just by the hair of his skin (and two million dollars of his own money). Now comes word that many are urging Carl DeMaio to take on Scott Peters. This race would become one that I could not predict the winner as both are very bright and focused candidates and DeMaio has moved more to the middle.

Movers and shakers are also urging school board member, Richard Barrera to run for the state Assembly in 2014 when Toni Atkins is termed out.

Word is also that Richard may take over Lorena Gonzalez’ labor/union director job when she is elected to the state Assembly. Richard Barrera is a bright young Latino with a big heart and a passion for public service. Keep your eyes on this Latino golden boy.

County Commissioner Bruce Abrams hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner at his historic home for Lorena Gonzalez. (A businessman paid for my ticket.) It was like a state dinner at the White House.

After getting strong support to go after a seat on the Port Commission, Bruce Abrams decided against it. This guy is like a father to his young nephews and nieces and they need his time more than ever.

I had lunch with Nancy Chase and our new first lady, Bronwyn Ingram. Look out for a first lady like the kind our city has never seen as she isn’t into “title” but she is into helping people and public service.

Will popular Nathan Fletcher be a co-emcee of the 2013 Nicky Awards?

Once again, SDGLN media got it wrong. I am not a board member of the GSDBA Charitable Foundation. I served one term then supported Stampp Corbin to be elected president five years ago.

I meet this week to discuss GLBT inmate conditions with Sheriff Gore and Council President Todd Gloria. I had a very enlightening tour and discussion with inmates at the Bailey County jail.

My doctor has ordered me not to travel until the end of January, so I hope to attend more local events.
