The GSDBA Charitable Foundation has announced that the 2013 Absolut Hillcrest Mardi Gras will be held Feb. 12, 2013 as previously scheduled. It had been reported in some LGBT media outlets that the Hillcrest Business Association had voted not to participate in the production of Mardi Gras 2013.
Many in the community were upset assuming the event would not happen. “We absolutely had a plan to ensure the event moves forward,” said Stampp Corbin, president of the GSDBA Charitable Foundation.
“Our focus has been, and will continue to be, to provide scholarships for LGBT college students,” said GSDBA Charitable Foundation board member Lisa Mata. The GSDBA Charitable Foundation has provided more than $125,000 in scholarships to LGBT students during the last ten years.
“It is so gratifying to help LGBT youth or allies achieve their educational goals by providing much needed financial support,” emphasized “Big Mike” Phillips, also a GSDBA Charitable Foundation board member.
While the board of the GSDBA Charitable Foundation was maligned in some LGBT media outlets, Corbin reiterated, “We try to rise above the pesky political machinations of organizational partnerships. We are focused solely upon the kids.”
According to Corbin, details will be forthcoming in the next week. So get ready to party for Mardi Gras Feb. 12, 2013 in the streets of Hillcrest.
Seriously? I’m glad this event raises some money for something useful, but as events go – there are hardly any that are more lame! Basically, you pay a large cover and then you end up walking down a sad little midway, putting up with those idiotic tickets for drinks (3 lines per cocktail) only to get bored with it all and find out you just paid a big cover to stand in line at a really crowded Mo’s. Who really cares if they put on another dum night of standing in line or not? My advice – don’t bother. Save yourself $100 bucks and a night of standing in line.
