Julie Andrews is a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman in Blake Edwards’ hilarious musical comedy. Set in 1930s Paris, Andrews plays an out of work singer who gets a gimmick by pretending to be a male female impersonator. Complications ensue when she falls in love with a Chicago gangster (James Garner), whose moll (a hysterical Lesley Ann Warren) is perplexed and enraged. Meanwhile the gangster’s body guard (Alex Karras) develops a fascinating relationship with her Svengali (Robert Preston). Rather daring for everyone involved in 1982, it was nominated for a bunch of Oscars and was a huge hit.
