Two hives of artistic activity

I think most of us in San Diego know that Día de los Muertos (aka Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday that is now celebrated throughout the world. At the root of the holiday it is believed that the spirits of the dead return to earth for one day to be with their loved ones. The Day of the Dead is a way in which the living remembers and honor their departed relatives and friends.

If you would like to participate in the associated festivities with what looks like a few dozen arty types then head over to The Spot in Barrio Logan. Día De Los Muertos Group Art Show will feature music, altars, face painting, food, art and much more. You are welcome to attend wearing traditional Day of the Dead costume and makeup.

The activities happen Friday Nov. 2 from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. It is free and suitable for all ages. The Spot is located at 1835 Main Street.

Dick Greene: monoprints

This coming weekend The Artisan Collection in North Park presents the monoprints of Dick Greene, now through the end of November. I met Dick when he participated in my quilt project this past summer. He is a one man industry of artistic activity and he seems to have moved on to prints. Unlike most monoprints, Greene’s works for this series are all one-of-a-kind; each arrangement of shape and color going through the press a single time. Check them out, chat to the artist and enjoy some refreshments at a reception planned for Saturday, Nov. 3, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
