Former NBA basketball player, John Amaechi, will speak at Framingham State University tomorrow night as part of the school’s ongoing “President’s Distinguished Lecture Series.”
Amaechi, the first NBA player to come out as gay, will speak about the need for equality in professional sport.
Amaechi, who has been vocal about gay rights in sports said, “I think people approach bigotry like there’s a hierarchy. Homophobia has always been to the bottom of that ladder.”
According to Boston.com Amaechi’s presentation includes stirring personal accounts of his own life as an “out and proud” individual, his ascent to a professional basketball career after having started at age 17, and stories from his book, Man in the Middle.
The President’s Distinguished Lecture Series was created in 2011 to bring scholars from across the country to the university for presentations on thought-provoking issues, ideas and theories. The theme of the lectures series this year is Accepting Others: Finding Common Ground.
