We are all aware of solar energy for the home. But most of us do not have it nor are we familiar with it and its technology. Slowly, more and more homes are being equipped with solar energy and it is something that all of us should be educated on and ultimately consider.
Solar energy is one of the most popular renewable energy technologies for homes and businesses. For every hour the sun beams onto Earth there is more than enough energy to satisfy most of the global energy needs. Solar energy is the technology used to harness the sun’s energy and make it useable. Today, the technology produces less than one tenth of one percent of global energy demand. Below is a very basic and general overview of how solar energy actually works:
Every day, light hits the roof’s solar panels with photons, which are particles of sunlight.
The panel converts those photons into electrons of direct current (“DC”) electricity. Naturally, the sunnier it is, the more energy is produced by the panels.
The electrons flow out of the panel and into an inverter and other electrical safety devices.
The inverter converts that “DC” power into alternating current or “AC” power. AC power is the kind of electric energy that your television, computer, toasters and most electrical household items use when plugged into the wall outlet.
A bi-directional meter keeps track of all the power your solar system produces. Any solar energy that you don’t use immediately will go back into the grid through the meter. Then that extra solar energy is credited back to your bill.
It is hard to make a decision on something big like installing solar energy in your home when you do not know a lot about it. So you owe it to yourself to learn more and then at some point think about putting it in your home. One of the biggest deterrents to installing solar is that the initial cost is high. My neighbor installed solar last year and it cost him about $42,000. However, there are several government rebate programs and rebates from the solar companies that you can take advantage of so your cost can be substantially less. But ultimately, you will come out way ahead by having solar at your home because of the money you save on your utility bills. Some additional benefits of installing and using solar energy are listed below:
Solar energy is clean, safe and benign.
The energy is from the sun and it is free.
Solar energy is a huge and unlimited source of energy.
A home solar system can recoup its cost in as little as a few years. Thereafter, all energy produced will ultimately be net-positive over the system’s typical 25- to 30-year lifespan.
Energy generated from solar systems can replace and offset energy generated from fossil fuels. Roughly half the electricity generated in the United States comes from burning coal, a heavy contributor to CO2 emissions and airborne pollutants. Using solar power reduces consumption of coal and, thus, also reduces greenhouse gases and airborne pollution.
Depending on the type of solar system used and specific installation, a clean-energy system can offer a degree of autonomy from the existing status quo of energy suppliers.
You can Google home solar energy to get more information on it or call a local solar representative to learn more.
Until we meet again, enjoy your home life!
