‘Follow the yellow (red, purple, green … ) brick road:’ WeHo installs Pride flag-colored crosswalks

Construction has begun of two landmark crosswalks along Santa Monica Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood, which will install permananent versions of the wildly popular “rainbow” Pride-flag themed crosswalks that were installed as temporary features honoring Pride month last June.

The Rainbow Crosswalks, as the city has officially dubbed them in a press release, will be painted with colors from the LGBT rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBT Pride, and will soon become permanent landmarks in West Hollywood. Construction will be finished by the first week of October, and there will be minimal pedestrian and automobile traffic interruptions at the crosswalks’ location, according to city officials. The intersection is among the busiest in the Los Angeles area.

Shariden Design Asphalt is installing the crosswalks. “As President of Shariden Design Asphalt, Inc., I want to express how elated we are to work with the City of West Hollywood on the Rainbow Crosswalk Project,” said Steve Klasna. “We have always had a positive and progressive relationship with the City of West Hollywood’s Public Works team. The Rainbow Crosswalks will rival other creative projects we have done with some of our other great clients in the past, including Sea World, the City of Los Angeles and the San Diego Zoo,” Klasna continued.

The decorated crosswalks run along Santa Monica Boulevard between U.S. Bank and American Apparel, and Citibank and the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department. This intersection, in the heart of one of the most iconic areas for the LGBT community, also serves as the entrance to the Christopher Street West Annual LA PRIDE Festival. The painting of rainbow crosswalks is a creative and unique gateway to LGBT activities in West Hollywood.
