KGTV, 10News’ new poll of likely voters in the San Diego mayoral election reveals a more lopsided race than the same poll taken in August did, with the Sept. 25 poll placing Congressman Bob Filner ahead of City Councilman Carl DeMaio by a 12-point lead.
According to the latest poll, Filner would win with 50 percent of voters choosing him over DeMaio. DeMaio, on the other hand, would go home with only 38 percent of the San Diego electorate saying they would have preferred him as mayor. Filner is the Democrat and DeMaio, an openly gay man, is the Republican. The pair face off in six weeks as the runoff competitors from last spring’s primary election.
DeMaio, despite being the lone remaining LGBT candidate in the race (District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, an out lesbian, also ran), has failed to ignite much support from the LGBT community. In fact, the local Log Cabin Republican club endorsed Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher during the primary. Last week the national LGBT candidate support organization, Victory Fund, declined to endorse DeMaio. Asked what the reason for its decision was today, Victory Fund told LGBT Weekly that it doesn’t discuss candidates it hasn’t endorsed.
Twelve percent of respondents to the poll said they are still undecided. According to the poll, it would take DeMaio winning all of those undecided voters, plus shaving off some of Filner’s supporters.
By comparison to last month’s poll from 10News, DeMaio has lost three percent of his support, while Filner has gained an equal number.
Some findings of the poll:
- Filner maintains a 3-point lead over DeMaio among men
- Among women, Filner now leads by 21 compared to the previous 10 points
- Among Hispanics, Filner, who led by 2 in the previous poll, now leads by 15
- Filner previously trailed by 2 among whites, but now leads by 8 points
