Modern Family, the American comedy series created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan scooped the award for Best Comedy Series and two acting awards at the 64th annual Emmy Awards aired last night on ABC. Julie Bowen won Best Supporting Actress and Eric Stonestreet won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of gay father Cameron, and said onstage how proud he was to play part of TV’s favorite LGBT family.
He thanked his fellow nominees and noted that he “wouldn’t be here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson,” who plays his husband Mitchell. “There is no Mitch without Cam,” he said from the podium, adding that he’s honored to “show America and the world what a loving couple can be.”
Earlier this year Modern Family received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Comedy
Last month LGBTweekly reported that Steve Levitan had thrown down a challenge to Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, after she revealed to ET’s Nancy O’Dell that the show was her favorite.
Other LGBT-inclusive shows that took home awards included Downton Abbey, American Horror Story, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Good Wife, Dancing With the Stars,The Amazing Race, and the Tony Awards.
