Logan Heights residents, labor unions plan ‘largest ever’ march against Wal-Mart

A coalition of neighborhood residents and labor unions will stage the “largest ever rally and march against Wal-Mart in San Diego history ending at the historic Farmers Market” Saturday.

Pride San Diego’s board of directors has voted to endorse the effort to oppose Wal-Mart’s expansion plans and what organizers of the rally and march see as the damaging employment and business practices of the world’s largest retailer.

“Wal-Mart’s ever-sickening addiction to growing its evil empire has burrowed right through the walls of San Diego’s historical Farmer’s Market building in Logan Heights,” wrote one activist affiliated with the cause recently. “Opponents of Wal-Mart’s invasion into their community were shocked to see the building that was supposed to be protected entirely demolished.”

Some residents in Logan Heights say they’re happy to have Wal-Mart; the jobs it brings as well as the low prices. But other residents, who are perhaps more vocal if not more numerous, say the multinational corporation known for its “Always” low prices motto and a smiling happy face, has dealt dirty since it first came to town.

In April, a court gave Wal-Mart a victory when it called the Old Farmer’s Market threatening to human life, health and safety. Within hours of the Superior Court decision in favor of demolishing rather than preserving the old building, Wal-Mart had the structure leveled and the pad of land ready for construction of a modern day “neighborhood market.”

“It’s good news when construction teams are back to work and residents are a step closer to getting what they have overwhelmingly said they want: more job opportunities and affordable grocery options in their own neighborhood,” said a Wal-Mart spokeswoman.

The rally and march protesting Wal-Mart in Logan Heights will begin at 9 a.m. at Golden Hill Community Park, 2590 Golden Hill Drive in San Diego.

  1. I’m for Walmart and all corporations that provide jobs instead of food stamps and unconditional welfare for all..legal or illegal..Millions of people have benefited from Walmart…the Employee’s…and those employee’s of the goods and services sold at Walmart…The Corrupt, Crony Unions are no longer about it’s members..They’re about power and control of it’s members and extorting Union dues to give to their corrupt Political allies…The UAW destroyed the Auto industry ..SEIU, Teamsters , AFL-CIO are ran by Marxists…Andy Stern, Hoffa and the other leaders are Che Lovin’ Gangsters…living the High life..using their members as a Cash Cow !

  2. Rob I agree with you on the first statement. However, Walmart is in an Enterprise zone so they get a huge subsidy per worker and then encourage the workers to go on medical and medicare. So it seems Walmart is profiting from hiring workers and then they profit from not providing them with a decent wage so that they can afford health benefits.
