Toh-may-toh, Toeh-mah-toh. Whatever way you choose to say it there was no argument at the SoCal Tomato Battle on what to do with it: throw it at anyone and everybody. This weekend we trekked up to Irvine Lakes to join in. We were thinking, what’s a more perfect way to spend Saturday afternoon than throwing ripe tomatoes at each other and strangers? There were many interesting outfits during the costume contest prior to the battle. One being “time of the month.” ‘Nuff said. By the end, we were trudging on slippery, smashed tomatoes and had a sudden urge for spaghetti!
Tasty spirits
We spent a couple of hours at the fourth annual Spirits Festival Sunday afternoon. The cocktail and spirits samples were abundant. It was held at the Broadway Pier Pavilion and the view while watching the bands play was amazing! There were several food trucks to balance off the alcohol intake inside the festival. Many of the brands we had heard of, such as Twisted Shots and 619 Vodka, but there were new ones such as Ron de Jeremy dark rum and Tatratea. Yes, that Ron Jeremy! One of our favorites was the green snapper mixed with cucumber, tomatillo and a few other spices. It’s like a green version of a Bloody Mary. Delicious and full of antioxidants.
Nicky’s
After a much needed power nap, we headed to the Nicky Awards. We both had a wonderful evening and extend big congratulations to all the winners. Last, but not least, may I present to you the 2012 Female Personality of the Year. My lovely wife, Kim Rescate.
Kim: Well, who knew I had a personality, let alone an award-winning one? Not I. It was a surprise for me. When Ana and I moved from New York a few years ago, we didn’t know anyone here. Now, we feel like we’re part of the community. I am grateful for all those who have taken a chance on us and given us the opportunity to be your friends and/or colleagues. You know who you are!
Ana Pines has a BA in film and TV from New York University and an MBA from Baker College. She currently works as a producer for PR Newswire and as a director/co-programmer for FilmOut San Diego.
Kim Rescate is a strategic, multidisciplinary designer with an eye for innovation and pixel perfection. She is currently the art director for FilmOut San Diego and a graphic designer/press officer for Diversionary Theatre.
I trust no toh-may-tohs were harmed in the making if this movie. 😉
We were assured by the Tomato Battle Core Team that the tomatoes used were past ripe, can no longer be sold, inedible and were not fit for human consumption. 🙂
