The list of speakers at the Republican National Convention reads like a who’s who of the most anti-LGBT politicians ever assembled.
Tonight, there is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who defied the will of the people by vetoing marriage equality legislation earlier this year. Speaking on marriage equality Christie said, “Neither the United States Constitution nor the New Jersey State Constitution contain a right to same-sex marriage. I believe marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. I think it’s special and unique in society.”
Christie is closely followed by Rick Santorum, who has compared marriage equality to pedophilia and bestiality: “Every society in the history of man has upheld the institution of marriage as a bond between a man and a woman. Why? Because society is based on one thing: that society is based on the future of the society. And that’s what? Children. Monogamous relationships. In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That’s not to pick on homosexuality. It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be. It is one thing. And when you destroy that you have a dramatic impact on the quality.”
Wednesday, Mike Huckabee takes to the stage. As governor of Arkansas, Huckabee signed legislation banning same-sex marriage in the state. Commenting on the LGBT lifestyle Huckabee said, “I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk.”
Thursday is Newt Gingrich’s turn. Gingrich has called for the reinstatement of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and supports a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. On the fight for LGBT equality Gingrich said, “There is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us.”
