Parishioners across Scotland got an earful of anti-LGBT equality during Roman Catholic services Sunday in the form of a cardinal’s letter mourning the legalization of same-sex marriage and beseeching the faithful to join the church to roll back the new rights, which the government in Edinburgh has granted to gays, lesbians and bisexual citizens.
Scotland‘s highest Catholic cleric, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, whose domain includes 500 parishes, said in the letter that the government had redefined marriage. He also announced the establishment of a marriage commission, which will be an official organ of the church. O’Brien said growing the National Commission for Marriage and Family into a force to be reckoned with will be a top priority.
News of the letter comes after the cardinal ended talks with the Scottish government in frustration. For its part, the government points out that no church will be made to perform same-sex weddings.
