The City Council of Austin, Texas this week bestowed the honorary renaming of 4th Street to commemorate the life-long service of civil rights icon Bettie Naylor. Naylor was a leading LGBT and women’s activist, as well as a founding board member of the Human Rights Campaign. To honor Naylor’s 30 years of service to the Austin community, Fourth Street between Congress Avenue and Rio Green Street will be fitted with Bettie Naylor Street signs. Naylor passed away on April 18 at the age of 84. In a statement at the time of Naylor’s death, then-HRC president Joe Solmonese said, “Bettie was a tireless advocate and never stopped working to ensure that members of our community received the rights, dignity, and respect that all people deserve.”
