Fashion, film and vermin

Mentor Tim Gunn, left, host Heidi Klum, and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia return for Season 10 of Project Runway.

The 10th season of Project Runway has begun, so here is something to satisfy that cult show’s more rabid fans in between episodes.

Did you know that the world’s largest gathering of fashion filmmakers happens right here in San Diego. That’s right; the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival is the first international fashion film festival founded in North America. From Thursday, July 26 until Sunday, July 29 the best work on the international fashion film art circuit will be presented in three screening programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla. Each program will consist of about 20 short films.

The Fashion Film Festival brings together creative professionals and celebrities involved in the fast-growing art movement. Films will be debuted, but the weekend will also include fashion webcasts, seminars, panel discussions, industry networking, deal making, after parties and more. According to the festival’s promoters, last year’s event was the largest gathering of fashion film professionals in history and the number of filmmakers and opinion-makers planning on attending this year has already surpassed that.

If you are interested in fashion, film and how the two are merging in a brave new digital future then you will want to check it out. But all this glamour doesn’t come cheap! Tickets range from $75 for a single screening session (which includes multiple short films) up to $225 which provides you with access to professional luncheons and networking events. ljfff.com

If you don’t have that kind of cash then consider Vermin on the Mount, something designed for our local but equally rabid literati. Vermin’s organizer, Jim Ruland, bounces between Los Angeles and San Diego offering up a set of writers who read tantalizing sections of their published (or about to be published) work. Once again Vermin on the Mount happens at 3rdSpace on Park Blvd. in University Heights. Paper-based reading materiel (aka books) by participating authors will be available for sale. See you there! vermin.blogs.com
