Gay mayoral hopeful Carl DeMaio booed at San Diego Pride Parade

San Diego-based videographer and LGBT rights activist Syd Stevens shot video of protesters at Saturday’s San Diego LGBT Pride Parade, most of whom shouted boos at, while a few turned their backs in silence to, City Councilman Carl DeMaio for what they see as the openly gay mayoral candidate’s turning his back against fellow members of the LGBT community. Critics in the LGBT community are incensed by DeMaio’s accepting campaign contributions from foes of marriage equality and other civil rights issues important to lesbians, gays, bisexual people, and transgenders.

DeMaio’ campaign officials did not respond to requests for comment on the Pride parade protest.

  1. I think we should also stop supporting his BF magazines and websites. Gay business owners and Gay friendly that advertise should stop . By advertising with Hale Media they are indirectly giving money to Carl DeMaio’s campaign.
Carl will do anything to get elected and his BF will do anything to help him get there.

Stop the Hypocrisy of carl DeMaio

  2. I wish i wouldn’ve brouhgt tomatoes to throw at him…. lol He’s the fakest guy that looks for his own interest and he comes out as gay when it’s convenient for him.

  3. Shame on Carl DeMaio- Union Busting is Disgusting. The real threat comes from his felonious boyfriend Johnathan Hale, aka John Wyckoff, aka Johnathan Hackett. Johnathan has admitted to compiling an enemies list of citizens who wont be allowed inside a Mayor DeMaio City Hall. Put that on top of his multiple personal bankruptcies, restraining orders for domestic violence, history of drug use and now you are cooking with gas!

@Travis that black, 4-door, Jeep Wrangler is the same one featured in this video- http://youtu.be/GldXiJMTbY0

  4. Our community should be better than spreading false statements backed by hate. I have been in social service work in San Diego for years. I’ve been an activist for AIDS, affordable housing, recovery, fair housing and LGBT issues. There is one politician who I could always count on for support and that is Carl DeMaio. When Stepping Stone was struggling for survival Carl and Jonathan opened their home to raise funds. Under Jonathan’s guidance at SDGLN this year he has focused on one community organization each month asking the community to support these causes. Carl DeMaio has helped other organizations like Townspeople, Being Alive and many others. He brought to our attention that our city was going broke because of out of control pensions. Other cities are going bankrupt as a result of these pensions, yet Carl saved our city and was backed by the majority of San Diegans. I know Carl to be an upstanding, intelligent and caring individual. He works tirelessly for all in our city. Whether you agree with his politics or not, no one deserves this kind of treatment…especially a gay man in a gay pride parade. This is not my idea of gay pride. It is gay sadness.
