Outdoor living: a San Diego thing

Beautifully furnished, comfortable outdoor living space with built-in fireplace.

San Diego has one of the best climates in the world all year. As a result, we as San Diegans are fortunate to be able to spend most of the year doing activities outside. Year round you can see people jogging, biking, hiking and walking their four legged friends; skateboarding, eating on their favorite outdoor café patio or just taking a stroll through their hood. But one of the most wonderful benefits to our incredible weather is having outdoor living space in our homes.

Whether you have a small condo or a more spacious home, it is essential to have some kind of outdoor living area. You can literally make a patio into an outside family room. Particularly today, when there is so much furniture and accessories specifically sold for exterior use. I recently sold a condo in the metro area that had the unusual feature of a very large 20’ x 15’ outdoor patio terrace. Although it was not technically considered part of the square footage of the living space, the new owner will be able to use it as a beautiful and spacious living area. His plans are to furnish it with some super-comfortable and stylish outdoor patio furniture. This will be his main place to hang out with his friends and family.

Depending on your budget, you can create an elaborate or a simple outdoor living space. If you have the budget, you can even hire a professional contractor to create a more sophisticated outdoor living space. I see houses all the time and have seen some of the most beautiful and elaborate outdoor spaces. Some examples of outdoor features are fireplaces or a fire pit, special lighting, trellises, arbors, built-in seating and water features. There is no end to what you can do to create your outside space.

I have also seen many outdoor living spaces over the years that have been done simply and yet they are still beautiful and inviting. So you can create a great space on a budget. One of my clients has created several outdoor living spaces over the years. He normally uses a typical 10′ x 10′ canopy to outline and define the space he wants and then simply furnishes that area with a variety of pieces. What makes it extra special are the accents that he adds like soft lighting, candles, pillows, sheers or drapes to complement the canopy.

So take advantage of our beautiful weather in San Diego and create or update your outdoor living space at your home. Spring is here and summer is just around the corner.
